As Occupational Therapists, we aim to improve independence in an individual's functioning within activities of daily living.  These activities include: eating, working, dressing, bathing, playing and going to school in the case of a child.  We make use of goal-directed activities as to make the session meaningful.  Through meaningful activities, learning takes place and changes are made to functioning.  As paediatric Occupational Therapists our aim is to improve a child's functioning by using play activities.  Sometimes we need to adapt a play activity in order for the child to participate.  In the case of a physically disabled child, we make use of neuro-developmental principles to facilitate more typical movements.  We believe in teamwork and therefore include the important role players in the child's life –  parents, caregivers, teachers and other health professionals.  The child is the most important part of the team and goals for therapy are set according to the child's greatest current need.  At our practice, we strongly believe in “the earlier, the better” and therefore aim to reach at-risk children at a very young age.  The vision of the practice is to provide a safe haven for families where they can express concerns and find a piece of hope for their child.
